Researchers at Cornell Tech have developed a new solution to supporting survivors of domestic abuse stop assailants from hacking into their devices and social media to surveil, harass and hurt them.

The model focuses on “continuity of treatment,” so consumers working experience a seamless romantic relationship with one volunteer tech consultant more than time, equivalent to a overall health care setting. It matches survivors with consultants who realize their needs and establish belief, delivers survivors numerous techniques to securely converse with consultants, and securely merchants their tech abuse heritage and concerns.

Tseng and her colleagues at Cornell Tech’s Clinic to Close Tech Abuse made the new strategy, in partnership with New York City’s Mayor’s Business office to Finish Domestic and Gender-Dependent Violence. Their analysis draws on eight months of info, as properly as interviews with volunteer technologies consultants and professionals on intimate spouse violence (IPV).

“This perform delivers an truthful glimpse at both the added benefits and burdens of running a volunteer technological know-how marketing consultant services for IPV survivors, as well as the problems that occur as we work to safely and securely offer computer protection assistance as care,” explained co-writer Nicola Dell, associate professor at Cornell Tech’s Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute. “Our hope is that our encounters will be useful for some others who are interested in encouraging at-possibility communities dealing with pc insecurity.”
